Lancaster Then
In 1841, the Republic of Texas Congress approved President Mirabeau Lamar to go into an agreement with 20 partners to advance settlement in North Texas and paid the organization with free land in return for selecting new pioneers.
In 1844 Roderick Rawlins was the first group of settlers in Lancaster from Greene County, IL. The rest of the settlers arrived by January 1845. One community was called Hardscrabble and the other Pleasant Run. The Pleasant Run community was established in 1846 by Roderick’s daughter Polly Rawlins and her husband Madison Moultrie Miller. A post office was established with biweekly mail delivery and Miller was the postmaster.
By 1850, he had spread out a town and sold plots, yet never documented a plat/quadrant of the local area with Dallas County. At its pinnacle, Pleasant Run flaunted a phase stop, school, and steam-controlled grist mill and the Miller's store. Madison Miller died in 1860. Pleasant Run downturned. Not long after the Rawlins' pioneers deserted the Hardscrabble settlement and Lancaster turned into the prevailing community once more.
The founder of Lancaster was Abram Bledsoe. He named the area Lancaster, after his hometown in Kentucky. Bledsoe surveyed and staked off the original town of Lancaster in 1852, thus it became established in 1852. Lancaster’s official plat/quadrant was only filed with the Dallas County in 1857.
